One of the main holidays of the month of Shvat is the New Year of Trees and special attention is paid to plants, which according to Jewish tradition at this time begin to “drink the water of the new year”. In the kindergarten “Beit Zindlicht” a whole week was devoted to the theme “Vegetables and Fruits”.
In all groups the children were introduced to different vegetables, told about them and their properties, and taught the blessings that are recited when using them for eating or drinking. The children planted bulbs, watered them and will observe how they will then grow. In addition, the kids prepared vinaigrette with their own hands and then enjoyed it with great joy, they learned how to prepare fruit drinks, such as smoothies, and in addition, they learned poems and prepared skits on the vegetable theme.
“Children are very fond of the holiday Tu Bi Shvat and everything related to plants – trees, flowers, vegetables and fruits – Malka Averbuch, a teacher at Beit Zindlicht, told our website, “we try to introduce the children to the world around them in a playful way, illuminating the process of this joyful learning with the light of Yiddishkeit wisdom.”
