A mezuzah is a small scroll of parchment with text written on it that is one of the central elements of Jewish religious practice. The mezuzah is fastened to the doorjamb of homes and other rooms, and serves as a sign of Jewish faith and protection.

On the mezuzah is written a Torah passage – verses from Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and 11:13-21, which speak of the unity of God and the commandments to be learned and passed on to posterity. These verses begin with the words “Shema Yisrael” (“Hear, O Israel”). The mezuzah is a reminder of God’s presence in the home and the observance of His commandments.

How the mezuzah is attached

The mezuzah is placed in a special case that is usually fastened to the right side of the front door (outside, usually on top of the jamb) in the house. It is important that the mezuzah be placed so that its top is slanted slightly toward the direction of the room.

Religious significance

According to Jewish law (halacha), the mezuzah is obligatory for Jewish homes. Its installation is done as a commandment to protect the house and its inhabitants. In a home with a mezuzah, it is traditionally believed that it protects its inhabitants from evil and brings blessing.

The mezuzah also symbolizes the Jews’ loyalty to their religious heritage and traditions.
