STARS Students Learn the “Libun Gamur” Method of Koshering

Students enrolled in the “STARS Intensive” level of the youth project of the Jewish Community of Dnipro – DJCY-STL-STARS Dnipro, supported by STL, took part in a hands-on kashrut workshop where they studied the koshering method known as libun gamur.

According to one of the project leaders, Eliyahu Ivakhnenko, the participants explored the practical aspects of kashrut under the careful guidance of educator Shimon Gugel. They learned how to perform libun – the traditional technique of red-hot heating metal utensils for koshering.

“In a warm but disciplined atmosphere, the students gained a unique experience that connects theoretical knowledge with deeply rooted traditions,” shared Eliyahu Ivakhnenko. “In practice, we discovered that not every burner can heat a knife to the required glowing red temperature – as libun demands. But a good old-fashioned fire did the job with ease, proving that traditional methods remain reliable.”

While demonstrating the koshering process, the instructor reminded everyone of an essential rule: only utensils made from kosherable materials, excluding plastic or wood, are suitable for libun.

“At the end of the intense session, to make good use of the heat, our teacher Shimon Gugel treated us to delicious grilled meat,” Eliyahu added. “The warm meal was a flavorful finale to the day, blending the learning experience with an atmosphere of camaraderie and true engagement with tradition.”
