A series of commemorative events took place across Jewish institutions in Dnipro to mark the 133rd anniversary of the birth of Bruno Schulz — an outstanding Jewish cultural figure, one of the founders of modern European literature, and a native of Drohobych, Ukraine.
A special program was organized by the “Museum of the History of the Jewish People and the Holocaust in Ukraine” in partnership with the “Hesed Menachem” Charity Foundation. As part of the museum’s cultural club “Freyakhs,” an online meeting was held with Dr. Yehor Vradiy, Deputy Director for Research at the Jewish Museum. He spoke about Bruno Schulz’s significance in the cultural landscapes of Ukraine, Israel, and Poland, and how Schulz’s legacy continues to be rediscovered today — as a writer, thinker, and artist of exceptional depth.
A feature article dedicated to Bruno Schulz was also published on the official website of the Jewish Museum of Dnipro
The museum had previously begun work on an ambitious three-part documentary film about Bruno Schulz, titled “Three Stories of Bruno”. Two of the episodes have already been released:
Part One: “Svoi Yuzko”
Part Two: “Bruno’s Women”
Unfortunately, due to various objective and subjective reasons, the third episode was never completed, and as of now, the continuation of the series is not in the museum’s immediate plans.
We would also like to recall that the website djc.com.ua was among the organizers of the first-ever public presentation of Bruno Schulz’s books in Dnipro, as well as the first cultural event dedicated to his work, which took place back in 2012. You can read more about that event here. The issue of preserving the memory of Bruno Schulz, as well as the integration of his literary and artistic legacy into contemporary Ukrainian culture, has continued to be explored on our website — in particular, in the analytical article “How Bruno Schulz is Being Integrated into Ukrainian Culture”.
