January 27th: Holocaust Memorial Ceremony and Exhibition Opening at the Dnipro Jewish Museum

The Museum “Memory of the Jewish People and the Holocaust in Ukraine” announces a HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL CEREMONY and the opening of the exhibition “THE AUSCHWITZ EXPERIENCE IN THE ART OF FORMER PRISONERS” in observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

The events will take place on Sunday, January 25, 2026, at the Museum “Memory of the Jewish People and the Holocaust in Ukraine,” located at: (Dnipro, KDC “Menorah,” Sholom-Aleichem St., 4/26).
Start time: 12:00 PM.

The organizers state: “On January 27, 1945, troops of the 1st Ukrainian Front entered the territory of the largest Nazi death camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, located near the occupied Polish town of Oświęcim. One of the first to set foot on the camp grounds was Anatoly Shapiro, an officer of the Red Army and a Ukrainian Jew, who witnessed firsthand the place where approximately 1.2 million people were murdered over five years. Among the other groups of Nazi victims whose lives were taken in the death camp, Jews constituted the majority. This is why Auschwitz-Birkenau became one of the most well-known symbols of the genocide of European Jews – the Holocaust.
On November 1, 2005, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the day of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp – January 27 – as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. It called on member states to develop educational programs to preserve the memory of this tragedy for future generations, to prevent future acts of genocide, and to preserve the historical sites of mass murder of Jews.
The history of the Holocaust is an integral part of Ukraine’s history, which was under Nazi occupation from 1941 to 1944. Every fourth victim of the Holocaust (i.e., 1.5 million human lives) was connected to Ukraine. Therefore, International Holocaust Remembrance Day is a significant memorial date for Ukraine.

The largest museum of Jewish history in Ukraine, the Museum ‘Memory of the Jewish People and the Holocaust in Ukraine’ (Dnipro), invites you to participate in the memorial events dedicated to International Holocaust Remembrance Day:

  • · HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL CEREMONY. Participation is expected from representatives of the Dnipro Jewish Community, state and local government authorities, public organizations, and educational and cultural institutions.
  • · OPENING OF THE EXHIBITION “THE AUSCHWITZ EXPERIENCE IN THE ART OF FORMER PRISONERS”, created by the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum (Republic of Poland). The exhibition presents the history of the Nazi ‘death factory’ through the art and memories of former prisoners – people who endured the horrific ordeal of the hell created by the Nazis.
Specifically for the Ukrainian audience, the Museum ‘Memory of the Jewish People and the Holocaust in Ukraine,’ in collaboration with colleagues from the Polish museum, has created an adapted exhibition in the Ukrainian language.
