A special gathering dedicated to the holiday of Lag B’Omer took place in the JBBBS program of the Dnipro Jewish Community. Its main idea was to combine active recreation, team games, and an introduction to the profound meanings of Jewish tradition, so that the children could not only have fun but also feel the inner essence of the holiday.
Together with the team of the tourist club “Kasta,” a large sports competition was prepared for the participants, in which each stage was connected to a specific symbolic meaning. The children united into teams, learned to support one another, act together, and find solutions collectively, recalling the importance of respect and unity that Rabbi Akiva taught his students. The participants undertook a kind of “path to knowledge,” demonstrating resourcefulness, attentiveness, endurance, and the ability to work as a team.
“We wanted the children to feel that tradition is not just a story about past events, but a living experience that can be lived together, through movement, play, friendship, and communication,” noted program director Tetyana Kaplunskaya. “It is precisely such gatherings that help foster in children a sense of community, support, and a truly warm Jewish environment.”
Two hours of activities passed in an atmosphere of joy, movement, and sincere emotion. Families came to the gathering together, with younger brothers and sisters, creating a special feeling of a large, shared celebration. While the children were engrossed in games and tasks, the adults helped prepare porridge and kosher barbecue over the fire – an important part of the Lag B’Omer holiday, associated with the tradition of bonfires and shared meals.
“We all sincerely thank the Jewish communities of Dnipro and Greater Boston for their constant support, attention, and the opportunity to hold such gatherings,” emphasized Tetyana Kaplunskaya. “We also thank Chief Rabbi Shmuel Kaminezki personally for his ongoing support, for facilitating our ideas, and for the opportunity to create a space for development, friendship, and inspiration for children.
