On the eve of Rosh Hashanah, after the morning Shacharis prayer, the “Hatarat Nedarim” ceremony – the annulment of vows – was held in all minyanim of the central “Golden Rose” Synagogue of Dnipro, as in other synagogues around the world. This tradition helps a person enter the New Year, leaving behind unfulfilled vows and obligations taken upon oneself.
The Lubavitcher Rebbe repeatedly emphasized that “Hatarat Nedarim” should not be treated as a mere formality: a person must be aware of the spiritual meaning of what is happening and sincerely intend to request release from vows. Words possess special power, and therefore, before the Day of Judgment, it is important to approach one’s promises and obligations with care.
In accordance with Chabad custom, in the Dnipro community, the annulment of vows takes place in the presence of ten men. Each participant in turn addresses those assembled and recites a special text from the siddur, expressing regret for the vows and obligations he may have taken upon himself and failed to fulfill. After this, the men acting as the court three times declare his vows annulled.
Having received the annulment, the participant takes a place among the members of the court, and the next man makes the same request. Thus, each person present goes through this ceremony and is given the opportunity to complete their preparation for Rosh Hashanah with yet another important spiritual act.
“Hatarat Nedarim” is an important stage in the preparation for Rosh Hashanah, reminding us of the power of human words, the responsibility for promises made, and the need to enter the new year with a pure heart and conscious intent.
