“Tov VeChesed”: A Lesson About Avraham and Changes in Life

The volunteer project of the Jewish Community of Dnipro, “Tov VeChesed,” under the leadership of Chana Nesches, held another gathering with children who are growing up without parental care and live in the specialized institutions of the “Good at Home” project. During the class, the children became acquainted with the stories of two weekly Torah portions – “Lech Lecha” and “Vayeira.”

The volunteers told the children about Avraham, who had to leave his native home and familiar life, yet accepted the will of the Almighty and was not afraid of the path into the unknown. Together they talked about how difficult it can be to find oneself in new circumstances, for the children too have to endure changes, and it is important that at such moments there be people nearby with whom one can share one’s feelings and who will help one see in the new not only the unknown but also the good.

After the class, the volunteers played with the children, drew with them, and treated them to sweets, for the “Tov VeChesed” program is not only an educational project but above all a program of psychological support, friendly communication, and the transmission of sincere human love and care that the united and cohesive Jewish Community of Dnipro brings into the world in the light of the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

“The story of Avraham helped us talk with the children about changes that are not always easy to accept,” said Chana Nesches, director of the “Tov VeChesed” project. “In our difficult times, children often have to spend long periods in shelters, so the opportunity to communicate, to receive attention, and to feel care is especially valuable. We wanted to remind the little ones that the new does not necessarily mean the bad, for it is very important for children to know that beside them there are people ready to listen to them, to embrace them, and to be with them.”
