From the press release:
The film Shchedryk by Olesia Morgunets-Isaienko takes us to the multiethnic city of Stanislaviv (now Ivano-Frankivsk) during World War II. Ukrainians, Poles, and Jews — three families, three fates, one tragedy. Their children become orphans due to Soviet repression and Nazi occupation. A shelter created by music teacher Sofia becomes a haven of warmth and hope, where the carol Shchedryk plays — a melody that unites, heals, and saves.
Yet even after the war, the heroes find no peace — the Soviet regime once again destroys what they have and tries to break the human spirit.
Today, as we once again fight for the right to be ourselves, Shchedryk resonates with even greater strength and pride. It reflects the very same challenges we face now: the threat of annihilation, painful loss, the struggle to preserve dignity and mutual support. This film is a reminder that cruelty may take different forms, but humanity always prevails — not through the power of weapons, but through the strength of simple acts: offering shelter, reaching out, refusing to turn away.
After the screening, special guests — including actress Yana Korolova, who plays the lead role — will meet the audience and share insights into the making of this important film.
