Yortzeit is the anniversary of a death on the Jewish calendar.

On the eve of Yortzeit it is customary to light a memorial candle, which burns for 24 hours until the end of the day of remembrance. A visit to the cemetery, where chapters from the Psalms (Teiѓilim) are read over the grave: 33, 17, 57, 72, 91, 104, 130.

After that they read those verses from Psalm 119 that begin with the Hebrew letters of the name of the deceased and the letters of the word neshama (soul). Kaddish for the deceased is recited for the first 11 months.

From the day of the first anniversary, one begins to memorialize the deceased on those holidays when the Izkor (memorial prayer recited in the synagogue) is recited: Shavuot, Yom Kippur, Shmini Atzeret, the seventh day of Pesach.

It is believed that observing all these rules is of inestimable benefit to the soul of the deceased. It is especially important to recite the Kaddish prayer.

On the anniversary of a death, it is customary to say the Kaddish prayer three times (in the evening, morning and afternoon prayers) in the presence of a minyan (10 Jews).
