Each week at the “Beit Tzindlicht” Children’s Educational Center, the main preschool institution of the Dnipro Jewish Community, there is a special topic that is integrated into all lessons, games, and group activities. This week’s theme is the holiday of Shavuot.
“We acted out the well-known story about the mountains arguing over which one deserved the honor of being the site of the Giving of the Torah, and why the humble Mount Sinai was chosen,” says preschool teacher Malka Averbuch. “We dramatized this argument, then created a visual representation of Mount Sinai with the children and imagined ourselves as participants in that great event. We explained that every year we celebrate the Giving of the Torah and receive this great Gift from the Almighty.”
Much attention was devoted to the various aspects of the holiday reflected in its five traditional names. The children learned about Shavuot’s deep connection with the Land of Israel, reviewed the seven species for which Eretz Yisrael is praised, and discovered why dairy foods are traditionally eaten on Shavuot.
“Our children are ready to welcome Shavuot and are eagerly anticipating the holiday, looking forward to celebrating it together with the united Jewish community of Dnipro,” emphasizes Malka Averbuch.
