“Menorah Community”: From the Importance of Time to the Power of Words

In the youth project “Menorah Community” of the Jewish Community of Dnipro, organized by the Zislin family, another men’s study session took place. It focused on two key themes: the fundamental role of structuring time in the Jewish worldview and the profound power of words — which can bring goodness into the material world, or the opposite.

Rabbi David Vayskovsky led the session, explaining the structure of the Jewish calendar and why the concept of time holds such critical importance in Jewish life. He emphasized that the first mitzvah given to the Jewish people concerned time. The commandment to sanctify the new month is not merely a matter of marking time but has deep philosophical implications that shape our way of living. “This mitzvah teaches us to recognize renewal, and that inspires us to believe in the future and to see light even in dark times,” noted Levi Zislin, leader of the “Menorah Community” project.

The second topic of the session was the prohibition of lashon hara — harmful speech. Participants discussed what types of statements fall under this category, how to avoid such language, and how this demonstrates the real, tangible power of words to shape the world around us.

“Each of these gatherings is a step toward a more conscious Jewish life and deeper personal growth,” concluded Levi Zislin.
