Hanukkah on Ice: A Holiday Fairytale of the JBBBS Program in Dnipro

The JBBBS (Jewish Big Brothers\Big Sisters) project of the Dnipro Jewish Community continues to open up new formats for children to get acquainted with Jewish holidays – bright, emotional, and unforgettable. This time, the light of Hanukkah shone especially brightly – right on the ice rink, transforming the program’s final meeting into a true winter fairytale.

“We always try to make every event not just a holiday, but a living experience that children will remember for a long time,” shares the head of the JBBBS project, Tetiana Kaplunska.

The final Hanukkah meeting of the program took place at the Most Ice skating rink and was bright, dynamic, and truly magical. The ice arena was decorated with a large colorful dreidel (sevivon) and a Hanukkiah, and the festive atmosphere was felt from the first minutes. To solemn music, the hostess told the story of Hanukkah’s origin and its deep symbolic meaning, while a real show unfolded on the ice.

A performance by students of the Ice Dream Club figure skating school caused particular delight. The young athletes captivated the audience with high skill, ease of movement, and sincerity of emotions, conveying the festive mood in every glide. Loud applause was the best confirmation that the performance truly impressed the young guests.

After the show, the program participants themselves took to the ice. Skating brought a sea of joy and laughter – so sincere that cameras didn’t always manage to capture all the emotions. Volunteers and older JBBBS students helped the youngest, and those who felt unsure stepped onto the ice holding hands with the performers and received helpful advice from the school’s coach, Yaroslava.

To conclude the festive day, all the children received tasty and symbolic gifts – Hanukkah doughnuts and sets of JBBBS branded stickers. They returned home with smiles, filled with the light of Hanukkah, the warmth of community, and inspiration for new achievements.

“We see how such meetings unite children, give them confidence, and a sense of joy from belonging to the community,” emphasizes Tetiana Kaplunska.

We sincerely thank the Jewish communities of Dnipro and Greater Boston for their support, as well as Chief Rabbi Shmuel Kaminezki for the opportunity to create such bright and unforgettable moments for children. The JBBBS program is part of the Kehilla Project and continues to give children a space of joy, development, and safe communication. We invite you to join our next meetings – there is still a lot of interesting ahead.
