JBBBS Summer Camp: “A Nation Like a Lion”

This summer, as part of the JBBBS (Jewish Big Brother\Big Sister) program of the Dnipro Jewish Community, a very special trip took place — a summer camp for children and teens that became a true celebration of warmth, unity, and spiritual inspiration.

A large, friendly group of boys and girls — from little ones to older teens — along with some parents, traveled to a picturesque camp on the grounds of the “Tulpan” complex in the Zakarpattia region. The moment they breathed in the fresh mountain air, all the fatigue and worries of the road simply disappeared.

The camp session had a symbolic name — “A Nation Like a Lion.” Every day, the children not only relaxed but also touched the depths of Jewish culture, tradition, and spiritual meaning. There was so much joy, adventure, and discovery: swimming, games, creative workshops, educational programs, and themed evenings. Especially meaningful were the kabbalistic discussions and heartfelt conversations, visits to the eco-farm, quizzes, Jewish-themed quests, and lively dancing around the bonfire.

An essential part of the camp was the celebration of Shabbat — with a festive meal, singing, stories told by the children, and thoughtful Torah talks. All food served at the camp was kosher, carefully supervised by mashgiach Shamshon Furlender.

“This camp was more than just a vacation — it was a shared journey into Jewish depth, to the joy of togetherness, and to light,” says Tetyana Kaplnuska, director of the JBBBS program in Dnipro. “We are deeply grateful to Rabbi Shmuel Kaminezki, and to the Jewish communities of Dnipro and Greater Boston, for making this camp possible. The children grew spiritually, supported one another, and experienced truly joyful days that will stay with them for a long time.

The campers returned home with new knowledge, skills, and friendships — but most importantly, with the feeling that the Jewish family is always near, and that light and inspiration live in every heart.

We are already looking forward to our next gathering — and we’re sure it will be even more amazing!”
