A new episode of the weekly lesson series by the Chief Rabbi of Dnipro, Shmuel Kaminezki, has been released on the “Menorah” YouTube channel. This time, the conversation is dedicated to giyur in Israel, the stories of soldiers who strive to officially join the Jewish people, and the spiritual meaning of the mitzvos that connect a person with the Almighty.
Rav Shmuel Kaminezki addresses a difficult topic: why the question of Jewish status can hold special significance even for those who have given their lives defending Israel. The episode tells about the program of Orthodox giyur for IDF servicemen and about how military service becomes for some young people a time of profound spiritual choice. Separately discussed is the difference between Orthodox and Reform giyur and the significance of recognizing giyur in accordance with Jewish law.
A special place in the lesson is occupied by the mitzvah of Bris Milah – circumcision, which in Jewish tradition symbolizes the covenant between a person and the Almighty. The Rav reveals several aspects of this mitzvah: from its significance as a sign of the eternal covenant to the spiritual joy a person experiences when fulfilling the will of the Creator. The conversation also includes the story of people who strive to fulfill this mitzvah even in advanced age.
This episode is about belonging to the Jewish people, personal choice, and the spiritual obligations a person takes upon themselves. It helps one understand more deeply why, for many, the connection to Judaism becomes especially important in moments of serious trials.
