Nitl Nacht

Wednesday evening, December 24th — the eve of Tevet 5th Tuesday evening, January 6th — the eve of Tevet 18th


The Rebbe notes that Nitl Nacht often falls on or near Chanukah.


What does “Nitl” mean?

  • The name “nitl” means “absence” — a euphemism for birth.
  • Some believe the word is related to the expression “nitle ve-taluy” — a reference to a person who is an object of worship in the religions of other peoples.
  • This date officially marks his birth.
  • The term “nitl” is also associated with the Latin natal — “birth.”


Torah Study in Nitl Nacht

There is an ancient Jewish custom (which has become part of the Torah tradition), as well as a Chabad custom:

  • Abstaining from Torah study
  • From sunset until halachic midnight (chatzot)


Reason

  • To avoid giving life force to the forces of impurity.


What needs to be done in advance

  • Chitas and Rambam
  • Be sure to complete the daily study of Chitas and Rambam before sunset.


For women

If the night of Nitl coincides with the time of immersion in the mikvah, it is better to wait until Chatzot. Source: Igrot Kodesh, vol. 12, p. 424


What is permitted

  • The mourner (Avel) reads the usual Mishnayot. It is permitted to read Hasidic stories.
  • It is permitted to read Hasidic stories.


When Nitl is celebrated

Nitl Nacht is not tied to the Jewish calendar, but to the Gregorian date,  depending on what date the local non-Jewish population celebrates.

Avoid renting or living in places decorated with symbols of another religion, especially during this period, when such decorations are especially abundant.
