Purim at the Alter Shul Synagogue

A bright and joyful celebration of Purim took place in the historic Dnipro synagogue, Alter Shul, located on Kotsiubynskogo Street. This special spiritual space not only preserves the memory of past generations, but also unites the current community, including the participants of the Jewish rehabilitation center “Dobre Maybutne”.

“We celebrated Purim according to all traditions with great enthusiasm,” said the rabbi of the Alter Shul synagogue, Adam Smilyansky, “twice, in the evening and in the morning, we read Megillat Esther aloud, and it was read by my son Shmuel Smilyansky, who was sent from the Tomchei Tmimim yeshiva, where he is currently studying, to fulfill this mitzvah. After the scroll reading, everyone was treated to festive refreshments, the exchange of Mishloach Manot, and a special emphasis on the commandment of tzedakah – charity, which is an integral part of the Purim celebration.”

Let us recall that the Alter Shul synagogue has a unique history: from the end of World War II until the end of the 20th century, it remained the only operating synagogue in Dnipro. After a large-scale restoration in September 2017, it reopened its doors to the community and became home to the Dobre Maybutne rehabilitation center.
