Purim Lived Together: A Celebration for the JBBBS Extended Family in Dnipro

For many years, the JBBBS (Jewish Big Brothers\Big Sisters) project of the Dnipro Jewish Community has united children, teenagers, mentors, and families into a single, cohesive community. Here, sincere relationships are born, self-confidence grows, and the feeling of a true Jewish family is formed. And Purim became yet another vivid confirmation that together, holidays take on a special meaning.

“There are holidays that are simply observed, and then there is Purim – which is lived to the fullest. This year, it was exactly that – loud, colorful, and warmly familial – for the extended JBBBS family,” says project director Tatyana Kaplunskaya. “The festively decorated hall welcomed guests with bright decorations, laughter, and a specially created photo zone, bustling with activity throughout the day. Children came with their parents, brought younger brothers and sisters, invited friends – and each one added their own unique mood to the celebration. The space filled with images of favorite game characters, superheroes, princesses, and good wizards, while graggers and whistles were at the ready to loudly ‘drown out’ Haman’s name, as tradition dictates.

First, participants connected with the meaning of the holiday – recalling the Purim story and its profound significance – and then immersed themselves in creativity. During a workshop, they made hamantaschen together, infusing each cookie not only with filling but also with good cheer. While the treats baked in the oven, the project’s older participants, together with volunteers, prepared a real Purimshpiel for the guests – funny, witty, and heartfelt, which drew generous applause.

A special surprise was the bubble show. Transparent spheres rose into the air, shimmering with light, seemingly carrying laughter and joy with them, which even the adults eagerly shared.

The celebration concluded with delicious refreshments prepared with the help of caring mothers, followed by a lively disco where everyone, without exception, danced. It was noisy, sincere, and very real – just as Purim should be celebrated in the circle of a large, friendly family. The photos from this evening captured not only the bright costumes and decorations but also the very spirit of the holiday, one you want to return to again and again.

We strive to ensure that every child in our program feels part of a large Jewish family. Purim is about joy, support, and togetherness, and it is very important to us that children come with their parents, that new acquaintances are made, and existing friendships are strengthened.

We want to express our sincere gratitude to the Jewish communities of Dnipro and Boston, as well as to Chief Rabbi Shmuel Kaminezki, for supporting these initiatives. Special thanks to the parents who readily joined in preparing the event – it is thanks to this unity that the holiday became truly special.
