Review of the January Issue of the “Shabbat Shalom” Newspaper

The January issue of the “Shabbat Shalom” newspaper – the first in the new year 2026 and the 396th since the start of its publication – traditionally introduces readers to events in the life of the Dnipro Jewish Community. Like previous issues, it was published in a shortened, eight-page format, focusing on the most important topics and events of the past month.

The front page features an article about a visit by students of the Jewish Lyceum to the “Beit Baruch” home of the Dnipro Jewish Community – a warm and touching event that became an example of a living intergenerational connection. Also on this page is a brief note about the unprecedented terrorist attack that occurred in Sydney at the beginning of Chanukah.

The second page is dedicated to a review of video addresses by the Chief Rabbi of Dnipro, Shmuel Kaminezki, on the weekly Torah portions, and also contains the beginning of a story about the celebration of Chanukah 5786 in the Dnipro Jewish Community.

The third page presents the traditional “News Panorama” of the “Chesed Menachem” Charity Fund for December, reflecting the main areas of work and events of the fund.

The fourth page contains the conclusion of the story about Chanukah celebrations, in particular, events held at the Jewish Medical Center, as well as a note about a women’s farbrengen dedicated to the yahrzeit of the Mitteler Rebbe.

The fifth page features materials about the opening of an exhibition and the lighting of the first Chanukah candle at the Dnipro Jewish Museum, as well as a story about an event dedicated to the New Year of Chassidus.

The sixth page introduces readers to the opening of an exhibition of works by David Maltsev titled “Portrait of a Synagogue” at the “Menorah” Center. Two short author’s sketches are also published here: “Karaites – Who Are They?” by Oleksandr Bystriakov and “The Path to a New Self” by Nataliia Chernyshova.

The seventh page offers a piece by Mykola Bulanyi titled “The World of Art and Jewish Artists of Bessarabia,” as well as two brief notes about news from the “Solomonika” JCC projects.

The eighth page, as always, concludes the issue with a selection of congratulations, announcements, and traditional jokes.
