On the evening of Monday, October 6th, the festival of Sukkot begins, referred to in the Torah as the “time of our joy.”
The mitzvah of dwelling in the sukkah begins on the evening of Monday, October 6th. After 17:51, all meals must be eaten only in the sukkah. On the first and second evenings, a festive Kiddush and meal are held. The festive Kiddush includes the blessing for the mitzvah of dwelling in the sukkah, which from this time forward is recited every time one eats a meal in the sukkah until the end of the holiday. Challah is dipped in honey, wishing each other a happy and sweet year.
The blessing on the Lulav (the mitzvah of the Four Species, “Arba Minim”) is performed in the sukkah for the first time during the day on October 7th, and then every day of the festival until October 13th inclusive.
The first two days of Sukkot – October 7th and 8th – have the status of “Yom Tov,” the remaining days are “Chol HaMoed.” Immediately after the end of Sukkot, on the evening of October 13th, the festival of Shemini Atzeret begins, followed immediately by Simchat Torah.
