On the evening of Friday, September 25, the holiday of Sukkos begins, called in the Torah “the time of our rejoicing.”
The mitzvah of dwelling in the sukkah begins on the evening of September 25, on Friday. After 6:14 PM, all meals must take place only in the sukkah – on the first and second evenings, a festive Kiddush and meal are held. In the festive Kiddush, the blessing for the mitzvah of dwelling in the sukkah is added, which from this time is recited every time one eats a meal in the sukkah until the end of the holiday. The challahs are dipped in honey, wishing one another a happy and sweet year.
The blessing over the lulav (the mitzvah of the four species, “arba minim”) is made in the sukkah for the first time on the day of September 27, and then every day of the holiday through October 2 inclusive.
The first two days of the holiday of Sukkos – September 26 and 27 – have the status of “Yom Tov,” the remaining days are “Chol HaMoed.” Immediately after the conclusion of Sukkos, on the evening of October 2, the holiday of Shmini Atzeres begins, and immediately after it – Simchas Torah.
