Shavuot at JBBBS: Ice Cream, Bingo, and a Conversation About Traditions

A warm and truly summery gathering dedicated to the holiday of Shavuot – one of the brightest and coziest holidays on the Jewish calendar, which children especially love also for the tradition of dairy treats – took place in the JBBBS program of the Dnipro Jewish Community.

This time, the program participants not only learned more about the traditions of Shavuot but also prepared kosher ice cream with their own hands. This unusual format generated genuine excitement: the children enthusiastically mixed ingredients, waited for the dessert to reach the right consistency, and eagerly discussed whose ice cream would turn out the tastiest.

While the preparation was underway, an educational part of the meeting was prepared for the participants. It was especially gratifying that one of the program’s students – Amir Arsenyuk – independently gave a short talk about the history and traditions of Shavuot. The children listened attentively, asked many questions, shared their thoughts, and an ordinary conversation quickly turned into a lively and sincere discussion of Jewish traditions.

After this, Jewish bingo awaited the children, bringing even more joy, excitement, and fun emotions. The meeting continued with a friendly snack, watching cartoons, and waiting for the main moment of the day – the ice cream tasting, which, as the participants themselves admitted, tasted especially good in the warm company of friends.

“It is very important to us that children not only have fun but also feel the warmth of Jewish tradition, learn to communicate, support one another, and grow in an atmosphere of friendship and interest in their own culture. We are sincerely grateful to the Jewish communities of Dnipro and Greater Boston, as well as to Chief Rabbi Shmuel Kaminezki, for their constant support of the program and for the opportunity to create such a space for the children. Many bright events await us ahead, so be sure to follow the announcements of new JBBBS gatherings.
