On the eve of the first Shabbat after the holiday of Pesach, a special event took place at the Weber family’s home — the baking of unique challahs in the shape of a key, known as “Shlissel Challah.”
For this warm gathering, activists of Dnipro’s Jewish revival were invited. They learned about the origins and meaning of the tradition to bake such challahs for the first Shabbat after Pesach, why these “Shlissel Challahs” are considered a segulah (auspicious act) for good livelihood and prosperity, and how to prepare them in the best way while carefully observing Jewish customs.
“It was incredibly inspiring and moving — to bake ‘Shlissel Challahs’ together with Rebbetzin Shoshana Weber and the women activists of our community,” shared Lea Maevskaya, the head of the website www.djc.com.ua. “While working, I recalled a wonderful article by Rivka Wilansky, ‘The Adventures of the Red Suitcase,’ which I greatly enjoyed in the translation by Yakov Khanin. I am happy to share it with our readers — https://ru.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/5625155.”
The event was held with the support of the Jewish Community of Dnipro.
