Yahrzeit of Alexander Abramovich Fridkis

Today marks three years since the passing from the material world of Alexander Abramovich (Alexander ben Bella) Fridkis, who for a long time served as the chairman of the Jewish religious community of Dnipro and the gabbai of the “Golden Rose” Synagogue. He was one of the pioneers of the Jewish revival in our city.

Alexander Abramovich dedicated his life to the revival of Jewish life in Dnipro. As one of the most active leaders of the Jewish community, he worked for many years as a surgeon of the highest qualification. During the Soviet years, despite constant threats from the authorities, he risked his career to support Jewish life in the city, attending the synagogue on Kotsyubynsky Street.

Our website warmly presents to its readers an archival recording of the Jewish television program “Alef” from 2019. In it, Alexander Fridkis tells the author and host Oleg Rostovtsev about the difficulties involved in supplying matzah to Jews for the Pesach holiday during the late Soviet era (the 1960s-1980s), and about the conditions in which the community lived before the fall of the Soviet Union.

We also invite you to watch a special video prepared by the Dnipro Jewish Community on the occasion of the completion and ceremonial dedication of the Sefer Torah written in honor of Alexander Abramovich Fridkis. This Torah scroll was gifted by the Dnipro Jewish Community and transferred to the Israeli city of Petah Tikva. Our website wrote about this here
