Our website sincerely wishes all our readers a joyous Purim holiday, which this year begins this evening, after sunset!
We urge you to carefully fulfill the four primary mitzvos of the holiday:
– Hear the Megillah reading twice (in the evening and in the morning). This mitzvah applies equally to men and women, to the elderly and to the youngest.
– Take an active part in the festive meal (or organize one yourself). The main Purim feast is held during the day, after the morning Megillah reading, and should be abundant with food, wine, and joy. The daytime Purim feast is a mitzvah; it should begin shortly after noon and continue into the evening.
– Send food gifts to friends – “shalachmones” (Hebrew: Mishloach Manos). To fulfill this mitzvah, everyone is obligated to send a gift to at least one friend (man to man, woman to woman) consisting of at least two different types of food. In this context, “food” refers to items that can be eaten or drunk immediately, without further preparation. It is customary to send the portions via a messenger, not to deliver them personally, as the very name of the mitzvah implies “sending” through someone. Portions are sent during the day and – attention! – they must be kosher.
– Give generously to the needy – Matanos LaEvyonim. On Purim, everyone must give charity to at least two needy individuals. Gifts should be given during the daytime on Purim, ideally immediately after the morning Megillah reading, in order to help the poor person prepare their festive meal.
It is best to give more and not refuse anyone who asks for help on this day.
