A remarkable cultural event took place at the Beit Baruch Jewish Senior Home of the Dnipro Jewish Community — the premiere of an original musical, created and staged entirely by the residents and staff of Beit Baruch. It is an unprecedented moment in the history of the city’s revitalized Jewish community.
The original script was written by Beit Baruch resident Yuri Fleishman, who also composed many of the musical segments.
“Yuri Mikhailovich is well over ninety, yet he is in astonishing shape, full of energy, and his talent inspires everyone,” says Rivka Lazareva, social worker at Beit Baruch and the director of the performance. “He wrote the entire Ukrainian-language script, half of which is in verse, composed most of the music, and adapted works by other authors — including Andrew Lloyd Webber. The result was something truly bright and meaningful. Yuri Mikhailovich also took a very active part in staging the musical, together with the musical director and leader, Halyna Leykina.”
The musical “Joseph and His Brothers” is based not only on the well-known Torah story that has inspired many cultural figures, but is also thematically connected to the festival of Shavuot. That is why Beit Baruch intentionally scheduled the premiere for the close of Shavuot, making it a powerful cultural finale to the holiday celebrations.
The premiere was attended by honored guests, including Yuri Fleishman’s grandson, who congratulated his grandfather — a true veteran of the Jewish community — on this outstanding accomplishment. Director of Beit Baruch, Malvina Ruvinska, emphasized that this cultural event was a landmark not only for Beit Baruch and the Dnipro Jewish Community but for the entire city.
The Dnipro Jewish Community warmly congratulates Yuri Fleishman, the creators and performers of the musical, and all the residents and staff of Beit Baruch on this significant event, which will surely be recorded in the history of our city’s renewed Jewish community!
