We are publishing several important details and nuances related to the observance of the Tisha B\u2019Av fast.<\/p><p>Let us recall that <strong>Tisha B\u2019Av<\/strong> \u2014 the <strong>Day of Fasting and Mourning<\/strong> \u2014 was established in memory of the destruction of both the First and Second Temples in Jerusalem, which occurred on this date. This is a full-day fast \u2014 it begins at sunset and ends after nightfall. It is permitted to eat meat and drink wine as part of the regular Shabbat meals. Shabbat songs are sung as usual.<\/p><p>During Shabbat prayers, all standard portions are recited, including \u201cLecha Dodi.\u201d<\/p><p><strong>SATURDAY, AUGUST 2 \u2013 SHABBAT CHAZON \u2013 EREV (EVE OF) TISHA B\u2019AV<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"2834\" data-end=\"2898\"><strong data-start=\"2834\" data-end=\"2855\">Reading of Chitas<\/strong> \u2013 until 12:45 PM<br data-start=\"2872\" data-end=\"2875\" \/><strong data-start=\"2875\" data-end=\"2885\">Mincha<\/strong> \u2013 at 1:25 PM<\/p><p data-start=\"2900\" data-end=\"3053\">It is customary to pray <strong data-start=\"2924\" data-end=\"2959\">Mincha earlier in the afternoon<\/strong> in order to have time afterward for the <strong data-start=\"3000\" data-end=\"3019\">Seudah Mafseket<\/strong> (the final meal before the fast).<\/p><p data-start=\"3055\" data-end=\"3228\">During Mincha, <strong data-start=\"3070\" data-end=\"3107\">\u201cTzidkatcha\u201d (Your righteousness)<\/strong> is <strong data-start=\"3111\" data-end=\"3126\">not recited<\/strong>, and following Mincha, the chapter from <strong data-start=\"3167\" data-end=\"3206\">Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers)<\/strong> is also <strong data-start=\"3215\" data-end=\"3227\">not read<\/strong>.<\/p><p><strong>Seudah Mafseket \u2013 Final Meal Before the Fast<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"3292\" data-end=\"3408\">This is the last meal before the fast begins. One eats a <strong data-start=\"3349\" data-end=\"3407\">regular Shabbat meal without any mourning restrictions<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"3410\" data-end=\"3532\">After the meal, <strong data-start=\"3426\" data-end=\"3479\">leftover food may be returned to the refrigerator<\/strong>, and the table may be cleared if mess is bothersome.<\/p><p data-start=\"3534\" data-end=\"3680\">The meal must be <strong data-start=\"3554\" data-end=\"3602\">finished before the fast begins \u2013 at 8:16 PM<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"3603\" data-end=\"3606\" \/>From that time, <strong data-start=\"3622\" data-end=\"3679\">handwashing is only permitted up to the first knuckle<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"3682\" data-end=\"3873\"><strong data-start=\"3682\" data-end=\"3715\">Children from age 9 and older<\/strong> are trained to fast for <strong data-start=\"3740\" data-end=\"3755\">a few hours<\/strong>, depending on their individual strength.<br data-start=\"3796\" data-end=\"3799\" \/>However, <strong data-start=\"3808\" data-end=\"3848\">they must not fast the full 25 hours<\/strong> under any circumstances.<\/p><p data-start=\"3875\" data-end=\"3994\">As long as <strong data-start=\"3886\" data-end=\"3911\">Shabbat has not ended<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"3913\" data-end=\"3957\">no preparations for the fast may be made<\/strong>, such as removing non-leather shoes.<\/p><p><strong>AFTER SHABBAT ENDS (AT 8:59 PM)<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"4044\" data-end=\"4191\">Say: <strong data-start=\"4049\" data-end=\"4089\">\u201cBaruch Hamavdil Bein Kodesh Lechol\u201d<\/strong><br data-start=\"4089\" data-end=\"4092\" \/>Then it is permitted to <strong data-start=\"4116\" data-end=\"4153\">change into cloth or rubber shoes<\/strong> \u2014 <strong data-start=\"4156\" data-end=\"4191\">leather shoes remain forbidden!<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"4193\" data-end=\"4372\"><strong data-start=\"4193\" data-end=\"4205\">Havdalah<\/strong> is performed <strong data-start=\"4219\" data-end=\"4253\">on Sunday after the fast ends!<\/strong><br data-start=\"4253\" data-end=\"4256\" \/>However, on Saturday night one says the <strong data-start=\"4296\" data-end=\"4318\">blessing over fire<\/strong> (\u201cBorei Meorei HaEsh\u201d) upon seeing a newly lit flame.<\/p><p data-start=\"4374\" data-end=\"4449\">The <strong data-start=\"4378\" data-end=\"4397\">\u201cVayiten Lecha\u201d<\/strong> blessing (\u201cAnd may He grant you\u2026\u201d) is <strong data-start=\"4436\" data-end=\"4448\">not said<\/strong>.<\/p><p><strong>MAARIV AND READING OF \u201cEICHA\u201d IN THE SYNAGOGUE<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"4514\" data-end=\"4629\">Only minimal lighting is left on in the synagogue \u2014 <strong data-start=\"4566\" data-end=\"4628\">sufficient for reading the prayer and the Scroll of Eichah<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"4631\" data-end=\"4767\">After the Maariv prayer, sitting <strong data-start=\"4664\" data-end=\"4704\">on low stools (no higher than 30 cm)<\/strong>, the congregation reads the Book of <strong data-start=\"4741\" data-end=\"4766\">Eichah (Lamentations)<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"4769\" data-end=\"4920\">Then <strong data-start=\"4774\" data-end=\"4792\">Kinot (dirges)<\/strong> are read, followed by the conclusion of Maariv with:<br data-start=\"4845\" data-end=\"4848\" \/><strong data-start=\"4848\" data-end=\"4882\">\u201cAta Kadosh\u201d (\u201cYou are Holy\u2026\u201d)<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"4887\" data-end=\"4920\">\u201cAleinu\u201d (\u201cIt is our duty\u2026\u201d).<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"4922\" data-end=\"4981\"><strong data-start=\"4922\" data-end=\"4981\">The blessings \u201cAnd may God grant you\u2026\u201d are not recited.<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"4983\" data-end=\"5137\"><strong data-start=\"4983\" data-end=\"5027\">It is not customary to greet one another<\/strong>. If someone was unaware and greeted you, it is permitted to <strong data-start=\"5088\" data-end=\"5111\">quietly inform them<\/strong> that today is Tisha B\u2019Av.<\/p><p data-start=\"5139\" data-end=\"5200\"><strong data-start=\"5139\" data-end=\"5200\">Women also participate in reading or listening to Eichah.<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"5202\" data-end=\"5310\"><strong data-start=\"5202\" data-end=\"5259\">Elderly or weak individuals may sit on regular chairs<\/strong>, as this is considered a necessity, not a comfort.<\/p><p data-start=\"5312\" data-end=\"5449\">After <strong data-start=\"5318\" data-end=\"5328\">Eichah<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"5330\" data-end=\"5339\">Kinot<\/strong> are read and <strong data-start=\"5353\" data-end=\"5373\">Maariv concludes<\/strong> with \u201cAta Kadosh\u201d, the <strong data-start=\"5397\" data-end=\"5434\">Full Kaddish (without &#8220;Titkabel&#8221;)<\/strong>, and \u201cAleinu\u201d.<\/p><p data-start=\"5451\" data-end=\"5567\"><strong data-start=\"5451\" data-end=\"5480\">Women do not wear jewelry<\/strong> on Tisha B\u2019Av, but it is permitted to wear <strong data-start=\"5524\" data-end=\"5542\">a ring or item<\/strong> they usually wear daily.<\/p><p data-start=\"5569\" data-end=\"5778\"><strong data-start=\"5569\" data-end=\"5618\">Dishes used during Shabbat may only be washed<\/strong> on <strong data-start=\"5622\" data-end=\"5645\">Sunday after midday<\/strong> (chatzot \u2013 12:45 PM).<br data-start=\"5667\" data-end=\"5670\" \/>However, <strong data-start=\"5679\" data-end=\"5750\">dishes with unpleasant odor may be washed immediately after Shabbat<\/strong>, using <strong data-start=\"5758\" data-end=\"5777\">only cold water<\/strong>.<\/p><p data-start=\"5780\" data-end=\"5871\">In the <strong data-start=\"5787\" data-end=\"5804\">bedtime Shema<\/strong> prayer, the <strong data-start=\"5817\" data-end=\"5851\">Tachanun (supplication prayer)<\/strong> is <strong data-start=\"5855\" data-end=\"5870\">not recited<\/strong>.<\/p><p><strong>SUNDAY, TISHA B\u2019AV<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"3719\" data-end=\"3998\"><strong data-start=\"3719\" data-end=\"3765\">Netilat Yadayim (hand washing) after sleep<\/strong> is done only on the fingers, up to the first knuckle.<br data-start=\"3819\" data-end=\"3822\" \/>The eyes may be wiped with the water remaining on the fingers after washing.<br data-start=\"3898\" data-end=\"3901\" \/>If there is dirt on the face or eyes, it may be wiped off carefully with a small amount of water.<\/p><p data-start=\"4000\" data-end=\"4210\">In the morning blessings, <strong data-start=\"4026\" data-end=\"4053\">&#8220;She\u2019asa Li Kol Tzorki&#8221;<\/strong> (&#8220;&#8230;who has given me all that I need&#8221;) is <strong data-start=\"4097\" data-end=\"4112\">not recited<\/strong>.<br data-start=\"4113\" data-end=\"4116\" \/>Washing hands after using the bathroom and before prayer is done only up to the first knuckle.<\/p><p data-start=\"4212\" data-end=\"4486\">A person who works until midday on Tisha B\u2019Av will not receive blessing from that work. A God-fearing person will not work after midday either, so as not to be distracted from mourning.<br data-start=\"4397\" data-end=\"4400\" \/>On Tisha B\u2019Av it is forbidden to engage in activities that distract from the mourning.<\/p><p><strong>SHACHARIT PRAYER<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"4515\" data-end=\"4639\">They do not wear a tallit and tefillin. They do not hold the tzitzit during the recitation of &#8220;Boruch She\u2019omar&#8221; and &#8220;Shema&#8221;.<\/p><p data-start=\"4641\" data-end=\"4661\"><strong data-start=\"4641\" data-end=\"4661\">Order of prayer:<\/strong><\/p><ul><li data-start=\"4665\" data-end=\"4747\">From the beginning until the end of the &#8220;Shmoneh Esrei,&#8221; the prayer is as usual;<\/li><li data-start=\"4750\" data-end=\"4776\">Tachanun is not recited;<\/li><li data-start=\"4779\" data-end=\"4882\">The prayer leader (chazzan) says &#8220;Aneinu&#8221; (&#8220;Answer us&#8221;) during the repetition of the &#8220;Shmoneh Esrei&#8221;;<\/li><li data-start=\"4885\" data-end=\"5058\">Then the Torah is read, the chapter &#8220;Va\u2019etchanan&#8221; (&#8220;When you beget sons&#8221;). The third passage is the maftir (final reading). The haftarah is read from the book of Jeremiah;<\/li><li data-start=\"5061\" data-end=\"5195\">The person who is called up to the Torah may sit on a regular chair during the rolling of the Torah and the reading of the haftarah;<\/li><li data-start=\"5198\" data-end=\"5291\">After the haftarah, the Torah is returned to the ark and the Kinot (lamentations) are read;<\/li><li data-start=\"5294\" data-end=\"5368\">Kinot are read sitting, but the passage &#8220;Eli Tzion&#8221; is recited standing;<\/li><li data-start=\"5371\" data-end=\"5454\">Kinot should be read with concentration on the grief of the Temple\u2019s destruction;<\/li><li data-start=\"5457\" data-end=\"5520\">The reading of Kinot is not interrupted by idle conversation;<\/li><li data-start=\"5523\" data-end=\"5698\">Then &#8220;Ashrei&#8221; (&#8220;Happy are those&#8230;&#8221;) is read, the prayer &#8220;Uva Letzion&#8221; (&#8220;And the redeemer will come&#8221;), skipping the phrase &#8220;va\u2019ani zot briti&#8221; (&#8220;and I, this is my covenant&#8221;);<\/li><li data-start=\"5701\" data-end=\"5771\">The full Kaddish is recited without &#8220;Titkabel&#8221; and without &#8220;Aleinu&#8221;;<\/li><li data-start=\"5774\" data-end=\"5861\">&#8220;Shir Shel Yom&#8221; and &#8220;Ein Ke\u2019Elokeinu&#8221; (&#8220;There is none like our God&#8221;) are not recited;<\/li><li data-start=\"5864\" data-end=\"5973\">According to our custom, after reading Kinot during the day, &#8220;Eicha&#8221; (the Book of Lamentations) is recited;<\/li><li data-start=\"5976\" data-end=\"6030\">Even a person praying alone recites Kinot and Eicha;<\/li><li data-start=\"6033\" data-end=\"6094\">Kinot and Eicha must be finished before midday \u2014 by 12:45 PM.<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"6096\" data-end=\"6469\">On Shabbat after midday (12:45), only those texts allowed for study on Tisha B\u2019Av are studied \u2014 passages describing the events of the Temple\u2019s destruction and the laws of Tisha B\u2019Av.<br data-start=\"6278\" data-end=\"6281\" \/>The Torah reading is chapter &#8220;Va\u2019etchanan&#8221; and the haftarah from Jeremiah.<br data-start=\"6355\" data-end=\"6358\" \/>All Kinot are read, then Ashrei, Uva Letzion, and Aleinu.<br data-start=\"6415\" data-end=\"6418\" \/>&#8220;Shir Shel Yom&#8221; and &#8220;Ein Ke\u2019Elokeinu&#8221; are not read.<\/p><p data-start=\"6471\" data-end=\"6664\">Until 12:45 PM no work is performed, no food is prepared (except for children and the sick), and one does not sit on high chairs.<br data-start=\"6600\" data-end=\"6603\" \/>The meal for breaking the fast is prepared only after midday.<\/p><p data-start=\"6666\" data-end=\"6891\">After midday, it is permitted to wash fruits and vegetables and to wash dirty dishes, even though hands may be fully submerged in water, as this is not done for pleasure.<br data-start=\"6836\" data-end=\"6839\" \/>After midday, beds are made and the house is tidied.<\/p><p data-start=\"6893\" data-end=\"6962\">On Tisha B\u2019Av, floors are not washed, but dirty spots may be cleaned.<\/p><p><strong>Havdalah for Those Allowed to Eat on Tisha B\u2019Av<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"7022\" data-end=\"7377\">A man or woman who is permitted for any reason to eat on Tisha B\u2019Av must make Havdalah before eating.<br data-start=\"7123\" data-end=\"7126\" \/>The wine is given to a small child who is already accustomed to blessings but does not yet understand the meaning of mourning \u2014 usually a child around 6\u20139 years old.<br data-start=\"7291\" data-end=\"7294\" \/>If no such child is present, the person making Havdalah drinks the wine themselves.<\/p><p data-start=\"7379\" data-end=\"7493\">A woman is permitted to make Havdalah over the &#8220;drink of the country&#8221; \u2014 tea or coffee \u2014 and then drink it herself.<\/p><p data-start=\"7495\" data-end=\"7582\">All those permitted to eat on Tisha B\u2019Av eat only what is truly necessary for the body.<\/p><p data-start=\"7584\" data-end=\"7784\">If a person needs to take medication, they should swallow the pill without water. If this is difficult, they may drink water, but only bitter water, such as very strong tea or water with added spices.<\/p><p><strong>MINCHA PRAYER<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"1527\" data-end=\"1559\">Tzedakah is given before Mincha.<\/p><p data-start=\"1561\" data-end=\"1637\">Before Mincha, the Parochet (&#8220;curtain of the Ark&#8221;) is returned to its place.<\/p><p data-start=\"1639\" data-end=\"1848\">We put on the tallit and tefillin with a blessing. We read the &#8220;Shema&#8221; \u2013 all three parts, &#8220;Shir Shel Yom&#8221; (Psalms of the day), and &#8220;Ein Ke&#8217;Elokeinu&#8221; (&#8220;There is none like our God&#8230;&#8221;), &#8220;Tehillim,&#8221; and &#8220;Chitas.&#8221;<\/p><p data-start=\"1850\" data-end=\"1914\">The Mincha prayer is said while wearing the tallit and tefillin.<\/p><p data-start=\"1916\" data-end=\"1977\">Torah reading: the third person called up reads the Haftarah.<\/p><p data-start=\"1979\" data-end=\"2189\">In the Amidah prayer, the insertions &#8220;Nahem&#8221; (&#8220;Console us, Lord&#8221;) and &#8220;Aneinu&#8221; (&#8220;Answer us, Lord&#8221;) are included. A person who is not fasting does not say &#8220;Aneinu&#8221; (&#8220;Answer us&#8221;), but only &#8220;Nahem&#8221; (&#8220;Console us&#8221;).<\/p><p data-start=\"2191\" data-end=\"2242\">After Mincha, the Rabbeinu Tam tefillin are put on.<\/p><p><strong>MAARIV PRAYER. END OF TISHA B\u2019AV<\/strong><\/p><p data-start=\"2291\" data-end=\"2471\">After the evening prayer at the conclusion of the fast, one should wash their hands three times alternately (as after sleep) without a blessing, wash the face, and rinse the mouth.<\/p><p data-start=\"2473\" data-end=\"2581\">Then leather shoes are put on and the ceremony of Kiddush Levanah (Sanctification of the Moon) is performed.<\/p><p data-start=\"2583\" data-end=\"2718\">If a woman finds it difficult to wait for her husband to return from the synagogue, she may recite Havdalah herself over tea or coffee.<\/p><p data-start=\"2720\" data-end=\"2804\">Havdalah is performed without a candle and without spices \u2014 only over a cup of wine.<\/p><p data-start=\"2806\" data-end=\"3011\">It is forbidden to eat meat and drink wine until 12:45 PM on August 4th. Washing clothes, bathing, cutting hair, reciting the Shehecheyanu blessing, and listening to music are also prohibited until midday.<\/p><p data-start=\"3013\" data-end=\"3055\">In the bedtime Shema, Tachanun is recited.<\/p><p data-start=\"3057\" data-end=\"3228\">Have an easy fast!
