Therefore, it is forbidden to prepare food in advance, for example, for the day after the holiday. But what should be done when a holiday falls on Friday? How then can one prepare for Shabbos?

This year, the first day of Shavuot coincides with Friday. In this situation, according to Jewish law, it is forbidden to prepare from Yom Tov for Shabbos. For this reason, our Sages instituted a special ordinance – Eruv Tavshilin. To perform this, before the onset of the holiday, one takes a loaf of bread and an additional dish – for example, an egg, fish, or meat – and performs a special ceremony that permits cooking for Shabbos on Friday. In Dnipro, as every year, the Chief Rabbi of Dnipro and the region, Shmuel Kaminezki, will perform the Eruv Tavshilin on behalf of all community members.

The popular resource https://ru.chabad.org presents the laws of Eruv Tavshilin from the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch.

101. Eruv Tavshilin

If a holiday coincides with Friday, it is forbidden to prepare for Shabbos on that day. This prohibition can create many problems. To avoid them, our Sages instituted another type of eruv – Eruv Tavshilin (literally, “mixing of dishes” – i.e., combining dishes prepared both for the holiday and for Shabbos).

To prepare an Eruv Tavshilin, before the onset of the holiday, one takes a whole loaf of bread (at least a k’beitza – approx. 54 g) and some food item considered significant (e.g., a piece of meat, fish, or an egg) – at least a k’zayit (approx. 27 g). All this is handed by one Jew to another, who is considered the representative of all those whom this eruv will cover. The one giving the eruv says: “I am giving this for all who wish to accept and rely on this eruv.” The recipient lifts the eruv at least 8 cm as a sign of acquiring it as his own property. He then returns the eruv to the one who gave it to him, and the latter recites the blessing: “Blessed are You… Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us concerning eruv.” After reciting the blessing, he adds: “Through this eruv, may it be permitted for us to bake, cook, store food, light candles, prepare, and do everything necessary for Shabbos on the preceding holiday – for us and for all Jews living in this city.”

The rules regarding who may act as the representative for Eruv Tavshilin for all who wish to join are the same as those for making an Eruv Chatzeiros (see 83:4).

The Eruv Tavshilin is created to show respect for Shabbos, since its function is to facilitate preparations for it. To emphasize this purpose, it is customary to keep the eruv until the third Shabbos meal. For each Shabbos meal, the bread from the eruv is used as the “double loaf,” and at the third meal, specifically this loaf is cut. Thus, with this bread, in addition to the mitzvah of the eruv, several other mitzvos are fulfilled: honoring Shabbos, the Torah command to remember Shabbos, and the mitzvah of the “double loaf.”

If an Eruv Tavshilin has been made, it is permitted to do everything necessary for Shabbos on the holiday – provided that enough time remains before the end of the day for unexpected guests to eat and enjoy whatever was prepared that day. Therefore, when a holiday coincides with the eve of Shabbos, preparations for Shabbos must be completed earlier than usual. Specifically, dishes that are to be kept hot for Shabbos should be cooked to at least one-third done before sunset.

If a two-day holiday coincides with Thursday and Friday, then even though an Eruv Tavshilin was made beforehand, preparations for Shabbos are permitted only on Friday – in no case on Thursday.

The Eruv Tavshilin must remain intact and safe at least for the duration of the preparations for Shabbos. Nevertheless, if preparations for Shabbos began after the eruv was made, but then it was lost or mistakenly eaten, all work that has been started may be completed.

What should a person do who forgot to make an Eruv Tavshilin? If he remembers on the morning of the holiday, before the meal, he may prepare more food for the meal than needed and leave some for Shabbos. If he only remembers after the morning holiday meal, he is permitted to prepare only one dish, bake only one loaf of bread, and light only one candle for Shabbos.

However, generally, the rabbi of the city (district, neighborhood) makes an Eruv Tavshilin that includes everyone who did not manage to make one themselves or does not know how. Therefore, in an unfavorable situation, anyone who, for the reasons mentioned above, did not make an Eruv Tavshilin may rely on the fact that the rabbi made an Eruv Tavshilin and may make all necessary preparations for Shabbos. It should be emphasized that this rule excludes one who did not make an eruv due to laziness, indifference to fulfilling mitzvos, who forgot about the need to make it without being otherwise distracted, or who initially relied on the rabbi to make the Eruv Tavshilin. Jewish law requires that every Jew prepare his own separate Eruv Tavshilin.

If, outside the Land of Israel, a two-day holiday coincides with Thursday and Friday, and on the first day of the holiday one remembers that he did not make an Eruv Tavshilin, he may make it on that same day and recite the blessing. He should then add: “If today is a holiday, then essentially I do not need an eruv; if today is a weekday, then through this eruv may it be permitted…” (see above, section 1). This is permissible because, as stated above (100:1), outside the Land of Israel, each holiday day is doubled due to doubt about which day the new month was sanctified. This rule does not apply to Rosh Hashanah, where the sanctity of both days is equal.

According to Jewish law, on a Yom Tov (festival), food preparation is permitted, but only for the purposes of that day.
