A recent study by Israeli researchers Michael Gilead and Gal Gutman, titled “From Myth to Model: Representation of ‘Jew’ in Generative AI,” was published in the respected journal\u00a0<\/span>American Psychologist<\/span><\/em>. The authors set themselves an ambitious goal: to determine whether modern large language models reproduce latent antisemitic stereotypes.<\/span><\/p>

The experimental methodology is elegant in its simplicity. The neural network was asked to generate brief biographies of fictional Americans, differentiated solely by their names. One group received traditionally Jewish names (such as Ethan Katz or Noah Weiss), while the other received non-Jewish names (Tyler Johnson or Kyle White). The researchers then used psychometric scales to analyze the characteristics that the algorithm systematically attributed to the characters.<\/span><\/p>

The results proved remarkably consistent. Characters with Jewish names were more frequently described as intellectual, competent, rational, individualistic, and oriented toward personal responsibility. They were attributed traits such as competitiveness, leadership ambition, high social status, and a results-oriented mindset. At the same time, they were notably less likely to be attributed emotional warmth, empathy, collectivism, egalitarianism, or a preference for horizontal relationships\u2014qualities considered particularly important in the opposing civilization of “feeling culture” or “therapeutic culture” within the Western world.<\/span><\/p>

Up to this point, the study holds genuine academic interest: it identifies a distinct statistical pattern. However, the conclusion drawn by the authors raises serious questions and concerns. Gilead and Gutman claim that this set of characteristics indicates that artificial intelligence reproduces latent antisemitic stereotypes of “cold and dominant outsiders.”<\/span><\/p>

Here, however, the authors appear to make a common methodological error: attributing consciousness to the algorithm. A large language model possesses neither morality, worldview, nor subjectivity. It does not “think” about Jews or Americans at all. AI is purely a statistical mirror, reflecting the vast corpus of texts on which it was trained. If that corpus consisted exclusively of works by flat-Earth theorists, the model would flawlessly reproduce that worldview.<\/span><\/p>

Therefore, the study says nothing about the “views” of artificial intelligence. It merely reveals which cultural image of the Jew proved most prevalent in the corpus of modern human texts on which the model was trained. It is important to clarify: this refers specifically to American emancipated and, in all likelihood, assimilated Jews, rather than a more authentic image\u2014the traditional inhabitant of the Eastern European shtetl or the orthodox Jew whose life is confined within the boundaries of a religious community and Torah study.<\/span><\/p>

Thus, what we have here is not a stereotype of a Jew in general, not an Israeli, not an orthodox Jew\u2014but only of the American Jew, as a highly specific group with its own sociocultural characteristics.<\/span><\/p>

If this were the conclusion of the study, it would be a fascinating and important finding\u2014though not about AI, but about cultural stereotypes that AI merely summarized and reflected. At that point, the discussion about technology and artificial intelligence effectively ends. And a different conversation begins.<\/span><\/p>

But the authors went further\u2014they effectively labeled this cultural stereotype as “antisemitic,” and this interpretation appears highly questionable, if not incorrect.<\/span><\/p>

Consider this: characters with Jewish names are attributed intelligence, competence, rationality, autonomy, readiness to take responsibility, leadership ambition, and success. If Jews were attributed stupidity, deceit, malice, or social parasitism\u2014that would undoubtedly constitute a hostile prejudice. But when they are attributed intelligence, a drive for achievement, and professionalism, where exactly is the antisemitism?<\/span><\/p>

The answer is to be sought not in AI algorithms, but in the value lens through which the researchers interpret their data. The explanatory model here is the concept of “Spiral Dynamics”\u2014a theory of the evolution of human value systems developed by Clare Graves and expanded by Don Beck and Chris Cowan in their foundational work\u00a0<\/span>Spiral Dynamics: Mastering Values, Leadership and Change<\/span><\/em>. This concept demonstrates that societal development proceeds through a succession of different value systems (“worlds”), each of which defines virtue in its own way.<\/span><\/p>

If we examine the AI-generated profile through this lens, it becomes clear that it reflects the value system of the “Orange” and “Yellow” levels\u2014the world of personal responsibility, freedom, competition, rationality, and initiative\u2014revealing an unequivocally positive image of a successful person. This is precisely the model of personality that Max Weber explored in his work on the formation of modern Western society. This is the ideal of rational individualism and the will to progress that Ayn Rand elevated to the highest human virtue. This very archetype of the self-made man became the engine of modernization and formed the foundation of the free world, which links human dignity to personal effort, intellect, and forward movement.<\/span><\/p>

However, the authors of this study appear to view this same portrait from a different value standpoint\u2014one closer to another value system (described as “Green” or “Turquoise”), in which the highest and nearly sole criteria of a “good person” are declared to be sentimental emotional warmth, focus on inner feelings, collectivism, egalitarianism, psychological sensitivity, demonstrative rejection of hierarchies, and avoidance of competition. This is where the true boundary of the problem lies. The debate is no longer about artificial intelligence. Not even about the Jewish character. The debate is about which values should be considered normative for civilization.<\/span><\/p>

The authors, perhaps without realizing it, declare as suspicious and negative the very qualities that built the Western world over the centuries\u2014prioritizing achievement in reality over inner feelings, action over experience, intellect, competence, individual responsibility, and the pursuit of success. As the absolute norm, they propose a radically different, sentimental-collectivist set of attitudes.<\/span><\/p>

This logical sleight of hand remains largely unnoticed in the article. The authors do not discuss their choice as a specific value position; they present it as a self-evident criterion for concluding “antisemitism.” They commit the classic observer error: mistaking a shift in their own evaluative lenses for a flaw in the measuring instrument.<\/span><\/p>

Meanwhile, the experimental results themselves prove nothing of the sort. They merely honestly confirm that the modern textual corpus associates Jewish names with the attributes of the Modern man\u2014integrated, purposeful, and competent.<\/span><\/p>

The main takeaway from this story concerns not machine learning algorithms at all. It concerns the transformation of the humanities. The study inadvertently reveals not the peculiarities of AI algorithms, but a deep value shift within a segment of the academic environment, where the traditional virtues of a free society are no longer perceived as virtues, and their place is taken by a highly specific worldview.
