How to Choose the &#8220;Four Species&#8221; and Correctly Fulfill the Mitzvah of &#8220;Netilas Lulav&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">One of the most important mitzvos of the holiday of Sukkos is the mitzvah of the four species, &#8220;arba minim.&#8221; It is based on the text of the Torah: &#8220;And you shall take for yourselves on the first day the fruit of a splendid tree, branches of palm trees, and boughs of a thick-leaved tree, and willows of the brook, and you shall rejoice before the L-rd your G-d for seven days&#8221; (Vayikra 23). <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The Oral Torah explains to us that the &#8220;fruit of a splendid tree&#8221; is the esrog (a special type of citrus); the &#8220;branch of palm trees&#8221; is the lulav, the upper young (not yet opened) shoot of the date palm; the &#8220;thick-leaved tree&#8221; is the hadas (myrtle); the &#8220;willow of the brook&#8221; is the aravah (weeping willow), whose branches have a reddish hue and whose leaves are long, with smooth edges.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">The laws connected with the kashrus of the four species are so complex that many, when purchasing them, prefer to consult a rabbi or to order a set that has an authoritative kashrus certificate (in Dnipro, it is best to purchase such sets at the &#8220;Yudaica&#8221; store).<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">It is best to have one&#8217;s own set of &#8220;Arba Minim&#8221; (there is an opinion that from what is said in the Torah \u2013 &#8220;And you shall take for yourselves&#8230;&#8221; \u2013 it follows that they must be the full property of their owner). However, by tradition, those who have a lulav and esrog unfailingly share them with those who do not, so that every Jew can fulfill the mitzvah of the &#8220;four species,&#8221; providing the &#8220;arba minim&#8221; &#8220;as a gift on condition of return.&#8221;  <\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">What to pay attention to when purchasing and using the &#8220;arba minim&#8221; is described in this short video.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><iframe width=\"700\" height=\"395\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/deLz5mW4Gb0\" title=\"Arba Minim \u2013 The Four Species on the Holiday of Sukkos\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">All seven days of the holiday (except Shabbos), one recites \u2013 preferably in the sukkah \u2013 the blessing over the lulav and esrog.<\/p>\n<p>The mitzvah of &#8220;Netilas Lulav&#8221; is performed while standing. One takes the lulav (here and below we will refer this way to all three species: lulav, aravah, and hadas, bound together) in the right hand \u2013 so that the sdera (the side on which the spine is visible) faces the one performing the mitzvah \u2013 and the esrog in the left hand, and recites the blessing &#8220;Who has commanded us to perform netilas lulav&#8221;: <\/p>\n<p><b><i>Baruch Atah Ado-noi Elo-heinu Melech HaOlam Asher Kiddeshanu B&#8217;Mitzvosav V&#8217;Tzivanu Al Netilas Lulav.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>Then the esrog is joined to the lulav in such a way that the upper third of the esrog touches the lower part of the lulav. On the first day of the holiday, when the mitzvah of netilas lulav is performed for the first time, after this blessing one recites &#8220;Shehecheyanu&#8221;: <\/p>\n<p><b><i>Baruch Atah Ado-noi Elo-heinu Melech HaOlam Shehecheyanu V&#8217;Kiyemanu V&#8217;Higianu LaZman HaZeh.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The &#8220;Netilas Lulav&#8221; itself is a complex series of movements: the lulav is taken in the right hand, one stands facing east, and, holding it near the heart, recites the blessing. Then one takes the esrog in the left hand, joins it, holding the fruit with the stem pointing down, to the lower part of the lulav. Then one should extend the hands toward the southeast, press them to the chest near the heart, and repeat these movements three times. Then one does the same, extending the hands in the northeast direction, then east; then raises the hands, returns them to the heart; then lowers them and returns them to the heart; then extends them in the southwest direction; and finally \u2013 in the direction of the west. Each back-and-forth movement (in one of the six directions) is repeated three times.    <\/p>\n<p>The meaning of the mitzvah of the &#8220;four species&#8221; is interpreted in various ways. First of all, the question arises \u2013 why, out of the entire plant world, were precisely these four species chosen? One of the answers \u2013 because each of them is unlike all the others: the &#8220;fruit of the splendid tree,&#8221; that is, the esrog, possesses a beautiful fragrance and taste; the &#8220;shoot of the date palm,&#8221; the lulav \u2013 is taken from a tree whose fruits are sweet but have no fragrance; the &#8220;branch of the thick-leaved tree,&#8221; the hadas (myrtle) \u2013 has a beautiful fragrance but is inedible; the &#8220;branch of the river willow,&#8221; the aravah \u2013 is inedible and has no fragrance.  <\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\">From this it is derived that each of these plants symbolizes a certain category of Jews: there are those who possess two virtues at once \u2013 both the fragrance of Torah and the taste for fulfilling mitzvos; they are likened to the esrog. There are those who have studied Torah a little and possess rather modest knowledge of it, but are distinguished by diligent fulfillment of mitzvos \u2013 they are like the lulav. Others, on the contrary, teach Torah beautifully to others but do not themselves fulfill its mitzvos \u2013 they are symbolized by the hadas. And finally, there are Jews likened to the river willow: they neither study Torah nor fulfill mitzvos&#8230; But what does the Almighty do? &#8220;They cannot be cast away! Let them be bound into a single bundle and complement one another, atoning for their sins.&#8221; That is why we must bind these four species, so different in everything, together, thereby demonstrating the worldview of Judaism: the aspiration to educate all these four types of Jews on the basis of Torah and mitzvos, and to grant them a sense of unity and mutuality in the relationship between the individual and society.
