In it, one should eat and drink, study Torah, meet with friends, rejoice, and be merry, for the Torah calls the period of Sukkos &#8220;the time of our rejoicing.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Tradition prescribes that every Jew take part in building the sukkah; moreover, the importance of every Jewish family having a sukkah is emphasized. The booth can be built next to the house or even on a balcony. Jews in medieval cities, where there was a great shortage of land inside the city walls, specially built houses with flat roofs so that sukkos could be erected on them for the holiday (this can be observed in many European cities; for example, in the center of Lviv, if you see a house with a flat roof, you can be sure it was built by Jews precisely for this purpose).<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">You can learn how to build a sukkah for your family from this short video.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-75e8883 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"75e8883\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3ed8a35 elementor-widget elementor-widget-video\" data-id=\"3ed8a35\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-settings=\"{&quot;youtube_url&quot;:&quot;https:\\\/\\\/youtu.be\\\/TJu4Br6af2w&quot;,&quot;video_type&quot;:&quot;youtube&quot;,&quot;controls&quot;:&quot;yes&quot;}\" data-widget_type=\"video.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-wrapper elementor-open-inline\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-video\"><\/div>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-49e0696 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"49e0696\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5bdf327b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5bdf327b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">We also invite you to familiarize yourself with a brief overview of the laws of the sukkah.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">The mitzvah of the holiday of Sukkos states: &#8220;In booths you shall dwell seven days&#8230; so that your generations may know that I made the children of Israel dwell in booths when I brought them out of the land of Egypt&#8221; (Vayikra 23:42-43).<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Every Jew is obligated to take part in building the sukkah (booth): preparing the schach (branches for the roof), assembling the walls, and decorating the sukkah (children engage in this with particular pleasure).<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">The booth must stand under the open sky (above the schach there must be neither a roof nor the branches of a living tree). Building a booth on someone else&#8217;s land is permitted only with the owner&#8217;s permission.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">The walls of the booth must be strong and stable enough that they do not move in the wind. They must stand on the ground (or be raised above it by no more than 24 cm). The sukkah must have four walls, but if this is impossible, three are sufficient.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">For the schach, plants and their parts are used: branches, leaves, twigs, vines. A living plant whose roots go into the ground cannot serve as schach. It is best to use tree branches, bamboo stalks, or reeds. Wooden components of small cross-section (slats, planks) may also be used as schach. The schach is supported by beams, which must also meet all the requirements imposed on the schach.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">The schach must be dense: the shade from it in the sukkah should be noticeably greater than the gaps through which the sun&#8217;s rays penetrate. Even if, in the overall count, the area of shade exceeds the area illuminated by the sun, one must ensure that there are no gaps in the schach wider than 24 cm.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">The Chabad custom is not to decorate the sukkah.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">&#8220;In booths you shall dwell seven days&#8221; \u2013 throughout the entire holiday of Sukkos, one should live in the booth, that is, turn the sukkah into one&#8217;s home: eat, drink, study Torah, rest, and receive guests.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Throughout the week of the holiday, the space of the booth becomes, as it were, a vessel of the mitzvah. Therefore, one may not enter it in dirty clothing or bring in soiled items; one may not, until the end of Simchas Torah, use the boards of the booth for anything else; and after the holiday, when the hut is finally dismantled, one may not step on the building materials or use them for unseemly purposes.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">By law, throughout the seven days, it is forbidden to eat and drink outside the booth. This does not apply to water, although it is desirable to quench one&#8217;s thirst only in the sukkah. The meals of the first and second evenings are a special mitzvah. Even if a person has been struck \u2013 G-d forbid! \u2013 by a grave misfortune or is ill, nevertheless, during the first two nights, they are obligated to eat at least a small piece of bread in the sukkah. The same applies to bad weather. If heavy rain is falling that could spoil the food, and there is no hope of it stopping soon, we are not obligated to eat in the sukkah and may limit ourselves to a piece of bread that substitutes for the meal. Pouring rain on the remaining days of the holiday (beginning with the third) exempts one from the obligation to eat in the sukkah. (Nevertheless, the Chabad custom is to eat in the sukkah even in the rain.)<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">On the evening of the first day, after the prayer in the synagogue, one enters the sukkah for the festive supper and recites Kiddush over a cup of wine. Following this, the blessing &#8220;Leishev BaSukkah&#8221; is recited:<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Baruch Atah A-do-noi E-lo-heinu Melech HaOlam Asher Kiddeshanu B&#8217;Mitzvosav V&#8217;Tzivanu Leishev BaSukkah.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Blessed are You, L-rd, our G-d, Master of the universe, Who has sanctified us with His commandments and commanded us to dwell in the sukkah.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">Then one washes the hands and recites the blessing over the bread. All year, by tradition, the first piece of bread is dipped in salt. On Sukkos, as on Rosh Hashanah, it is dipped in honey. Every time we eat in the sukkah, following the blessing &#8220;Hamotzi&#8221; (over bread) or &#8220;Mezonos&#8221; (over cake or cookies), the blessing &#8220;Leishev BaSukkah&#8221; should be added. But it is not recited on the eighth day \u2013 on Shmini Atzeres.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">The Chabad custom is not to sleep in the sukkah. More about its rationale can be read <a href=\"https:\/\/ru.chabad.org\/library\/article_cdo\/aid\/2725300\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/span><span class=\"\">, and in a humorous but very thorough presentation \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/ru.chabad.org\/library\/article_cdo\/aid\/2757271\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"ds-markdown-paragraph\"><span class=\"\">The mitzvah of &#8220;sukkah&#8221; does not apply to women, and they are not obligated to eat in the booth.
