The Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine,” the leading cultural and historical institution of the Jewish Community of Dnipro and the largest Jewish museum in Ukraine, marked the fourteenth anniversary of its opening at the world’s largest Jewish center, “Menorah,” with a whole series of special events, the central one of which was the opening of the exhibition “Memory. Monuments. People,” dedicated to the history of the preservation and transformation of the memory of the Holocaust in Dnipro – from oblivion and Soviet ideological narratives to the revival of a full and authentic historical memory.

The exhibition, which is a unique collection of historical photographs and documentary testimonies, was opened by the Director of the Museum “Jewish Memory and Holocaust in Ukraine,” Candidate of Historical Sciences, Dr. Iryna Radchenko. She congratulated the participants of the celebration of the fourteenth anniversary of the Jewish Museum of Dnipro, after which the Deputy Director of the Museum for Research, Dr. Yehor Vradiy, conducted the first tour of the new exposition, acquainting visitors with the history of the decades-long struggle for the preservation of the memory of the Jewish victims of the Holocaust.

The first part of the exhibition is dedicated to the Soviet period, when the memory of the mass shootings was preserved under conditions of an official ideology that effectively denied the Jewish character of the Holocaust tragedy. The monuments erected at the sites of mass killings spoke of the deceased “peaceful Soviet citizens,” yet did not state that the victims of the Nazi genocide were Jews, doomed to death precisely and exclusively because of their Jewish origin. Behind the outwardly neutral formula about “peaceful citizens,” which supposedly united all the victims, was hidden a fundamental substitution of historical memory, for the deliberate destruction of the Jewish people was ignored in the general account of the suffering of the Soviet population. The photographs of monuments and memorial signs presented at the exhibition make it possible to trace how this ideological directive determined the official culture of memory for decades.

A special place in the exposition is occupied by the history of the efforts of the Jews of Dnipro themselves, who strove to preserve the memory of the tragedy of their people in defiance of the restrictions and silencing of Soviet times. One of the main heroes of this account was Arkadiy Leonidovich Shmist, a pioneer of the Jewish revival and an outstanding Jewish public leader who played a key role in returning the memory of the Holocaust to the public space of the city. Already in the late 1980s, he organized the first mourning rallies dedicated to the Jewish victims of the Nazi shootings and worked to ensure that the tragedy was called by its true name. The tour participants learned about these first events, about the materials used to preserve historical memory, and about the people thanks to whom the return of the truth about the Holocaust to public consciousness began – such as Reb Hirsh Korol, Alexander Fridkis, Mikhail Karshenbaum, and Alla Gelberg.

The next most important stage in the return of memory was the systematic work of the revived united and cohesive Jewish Community of Dnipro under the leadership of Chief Rabbi Shmuel Kaminezki, when the preservation of the memory of the victims became one of the significant components of the community’s activity. Special attention at the exhibition is given to the opening in 2000 of the memorial sign at the site of the mass shootings of Jews in the Botanical Garden, now Students’ Park of Dnipro National University. The construction of this memorial became a fundamentally important event, since the Jewish tragedy received a worthy and open commemoration, and the memory of the victims of the Holocaust acquired its own place in the historical space of the city.

The exposition also shows how the attitude toward the memory of the Holocaust gradually changed throughout Dnipro. Whereas previously the preservation of this memory was primarily the affair of Jewish activists and the community, over time city structures, representatives of various religious confessions, and the public began to join the memorial events. The memory of the tragedy of the Jewish people became an inseparable part of the city’s historical self-awareness, and the events dedicated to the anniversaries of the mass shootings acquired citywide significance.

This process was manifested especially vividly during the events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the beginning of the mass shootings of the Jews of Dnipro. Their scale and the participation of representatives of all the main religious confessions of the city became testimony to the enormous path that had been traversed from the Soviet silencing of the Jewish tragedy to the open public recognition of its historical significance. It is precisely this sequence – from depersonalized Soviet monuments through the efforts of Jewish activists to modern memorial complexes and citywide ceremonies of remembrance – that the exhibition “Memory. Monuments. People” allows one to see.

The significance of this exposition also lies in the fact that it tells not only about monuments as material testimonies of history but above all about the people who stood behind their creation, preservation, and reinterpretation. For historical memory does not exist on its own; it requires the efforts of those who are ready to defend the truth about the past, transmit it to future generations, and not allow oblivion. That is precisely why the exhibition, opened on the day of the fourteenth anniversary of the Jewish Museum of Dnipro, became not only an account of the history of the commemoration of the Holocaust but also a kind of testimony to the most important mission of the Museum itself and of the entire Jewish Community of Dnipro.

The conclusion of the series of events dedicated to the fourteenth anniversary of the Museum was a raffle of commemorative gifts, among which a special place was occupied by the postal marked sheet “The Holocaust in Dnipro. 85th Anniversary of the Beginning of the Tragedy,” created through the joint efforts of the Jewish Museum of Dnipro and Ukrposhta for the 85th anniversary of the beginning of the mass shootings of the city’s Jews. This unique philatelic issue became yet another form of preserving historical memory, uniting museum work and the modern culture of public commemoration of the tragic pages of the past.

The exhibition “Memory. Monuments. People” will be open to visitors of the Jewish Museum of Dnipro until November 15, offering all who wish the opportunity to become acquainted with the history of how the memory of the Holocaust in Dnipro overcame decades of silencing and became the most important part of the historical heritage of the city and its Jewish community.
