An important and inspiring lecture took place at the Hillel space as part of the all-Ukrainian project “Avotaynu” – “Jewish Genealogy: Researching Family History.”
About 50 participants from across the Dnipro Jewish community joined the gathering to immerse themselves in the world of family memory, the search for lost names, and the restoration of connections between generations. The event brought together representatives of different organizations, generations, and family histories around a shared aspiration – to learn more about their origins and preserve the memory of their ancestors.
The lecturer for the gathering and author of the project was Yarick Herman, a foundation representative and specialist in genealogical research. He shared practical knowledge about searching for archival documents, working with historical sources, and the step-by-step construction of one’s own family tree. Participants learned where to find information about their ancestors, how to restore documentary evidence of Jewish origin, and how to research the fates of relatives during the Holocaust.
A separate part of the event was a drawing for a DNA test. The winner was Hillel participant Vladyslav, who promised to share the results of his research and continue the story of searching for his own roots.
The organizers of the “Avotaynu” project emphasize that such gatherings not only provide new knowledge but also help people feel a deeper connection to their history, family, and traditions. For many participants, the lecture was another step toward preserving family memory and understanding their own identity.
Hillel JCC thanks the project organizers and the lecturer for the opportunity to create important events that unite the Dnipro Jewish community around shared values, memory, and cultural heritage.
